Our History
In the spring of 1988, a group of passionate gardeners settled on our beautiful barrier island, eager to expand their knowledge of the unique southern flora that thrived in this environment. They faced many gardening challenges including adapting to the local climate and navigating the pesky deer population.
As they shared ideas over coffee and strolls on the beach, they realized the joy of gardening unites a community. This small group of eighteen garden enthusiasts officially became a garden club, naming themselves the Marsh Hens...UNTIL it was discovered there was no such bird! In 1989, the name officially became the Seabrook Island Garden Club.
In the next few years, the membership grew quickly as programs expanded include informational and educational lectures, workshops, field trips, and social events.
35 years later through destructive storms and a global pandemic, the garden club is still growing, still learning and still celebrating all things gardening and community.
